Rules and Expectations.
To promote the most successful and accommodating academic environment, the classroom will be governed using the policies outlined in the Student’s Rights and Responsibilities Handbook and the standard procedures created for Ardrey Kell High School.
Students are expected to be respectful of the teacher, other students, and themselves. This means coming to class on time, prepared, and ready to participate in a meaningful way.

Failure to adhere to class and school expectations.
- Major infractions (i.e. violence, illicit substances, sexual harassment) will be referred to administration.
- Other infractions and class disruptions will result in the following measures:
- First offense: verbal warning
- Second offense: conference with teacher and phone call home
- Third offense: conference with teacher, administrator and parents
- Fourth offense: after-school detention (ASD)
- Fifth offense: referral to administration
Grading Scale and Weighting.
Students will be assessed in various manners throughout the year, individually, and as an active (collaborative) member of a group. Students should expect to earn credit on a daily basis and should study nightly to retain information covered in class. Please note that all graded work will be kept in individual student portfolios in the classroom. Parents may view their students’ folders through a checkout process.
Parents should have access to PowerSchool on a daily basis. Please use this as a tool to monitor progress in the course. Email me if you have any questions regarding a specific grade. *Please note CMS has revised the grading scale to a 10-point scale.

Tutoring.
Tutoring sessions can be arranged by appointment. Times before and after school are available, but a twenty-four hour notice must be given in advance of a desired tutoring session to ensure the highest quality of individual instruction. Scheduling a tutoring session means that the student will come with specific questions about material. Knight Time is another available time for students to seek assistance with concepts that they may be struggling.
For the 2016-2017 academic year, I will be available daily before school (6:55-7:20 a.m.) and Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays after school (2:20-3 p.m.).

Late and Missing Work.
The policies below apply to all courses and teachers within the English Department at Ardrey Kell High School. "Work" is categorized as assignments, homework, class work, projects, essays, and papers. Please note that the work will be evaluated and reductions assessed after the penalties listed below. Students are accountable for turning in late work regardless of absences that follow the original due date.
- Work NOT turned in will result in a zero.
- Work turned in one day late will result in a 10% reduction of grade after assessment.
- Work turned in two days late will result in a 20% reduction of grade after assessment.
- Work turned in three days OR later will result in a 50% reduction of grade after assessment.
Retesting Policy.
Per AK policy, students in a standard level core class who score below a 70% on a test will have the opportunity to review and then retest. Students must complete assigned after-school review before the retest occurs. The maximum score a student may achieve on the retest is a 69%.
Procedures:
1) Students must have a parent sign their grade acknowledgment form. This will serve as a ticket into the assigned after school tutoring.
2) Students must sign up for and attend a scheduled after-school tutoring session (2:30-3:15). During that session, teachers will go over the test and discuss test corrections. Note: any student who does not show up will not be admitted into retesting. Also, any student who demonstrates behavioral problems during the tutoring session or the testing session will be asked to leave and will not be able to retest.
3) The tutoring teacher must sign the test acknowledgement form. This will serve as a ticket into retesting.

Re-Testing Ticket. You must PRINT and complete all parts of the ticket in order to attend the tutorial session and re-test.

Test/ Quiz Corrections.
Students in standard and honors level English II who score below a C on a formal test or quiz will have the opportunity to complete test/quiz corrections for an informal grade. This is an additional assignment; it will not change the original assessment grade.
Turn It In.
In addition to submitting a printed copy of a major paper, you must upload it to turnitin.com. Use the account IDs and passwords provided in class and on the website.
Honor Code.
Students are expected to do their own work at all times. Cheating is defined as copying tests, quizzes, homework, and other assignments; allowing others to copy your work; and any form of plagiarism. Plagiarism or cheating will result in an automatic zero for the assignment.
